France striker Olivier Giroud said he wrote a message to forward Karim Benzema after his forced departure from the national team before the start of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Benzema arrived at the tournament but was injured in training two days later. The Frenchman missed the 2022 World Cup due to damage to the quadriceps femoris. In December, the Ballon d’Or winner announced his retirement from the national team.

– I wrote a message as soon as Benzema left (from the national team), as we could not say goodbye to him. It was sincere and spontaneous. Told him we were disappointed. I was upset by his departure, — quotes Giroud RMC Sport with reference to Canal +.

Benzema has been with the French national team since 2007, making 97 appearances and scoring 37 goals.

At the World Cup in Qatar, the French team won silver, losing in the final to the team of Argentina.
