Valencia suffered a single relegation to the second division in the almost 100-year history of La Liga.
The team that reached the First Division in the 1931-32 season, after three years in the Second Division since the first edition of La Liga, and has barely visited the silver division since then.
It was in Season 1985-1986 when Valencia failed to avoid relegation after winning four First Division titles between 1942 and 1971 and winning the Copa del Rey multiple times and international tournaments such as the 1980 European Cup Winners’ Cup.
In the 1985-1986 campaign Valencia finished 16th out of 18 teams in La Liga and, with the club heavily in debt, went into relegation due to existence one point behind Cádiz. Relegation was completed on the penultimate day of the competition when Valencia went down 3-0 to Barcelona and Cádiz drew 1-1 against Betis.
The team were crowned champions of the second division the following year and never suffered relegation again, with 14th place in the 1987-1988 season standings (19th and 20th were relegated while 17th and 18th had to play-off with Second teams) as the worst result since.
