Former Barcelona sporting director Eric Abidal told Sport24 that in 2019 the Catalans were following Russian midfielder Alexei Miranchuk.

In 2020, Miranchuk left Lokomotiv and moved to Atalanta, and in 2022 he was loaned to Torino.

– During your career, was Barcelona interested in Andrey Arshavin as a player?

– No, there was no talk about Arshavin. However, I can say for sure that when I was the main scout of Barcelona, we were interested in the only Russian – Alexei Miranchuk. In 2019, we came to Moscow and looked at the player at Lokomotiv, talked with the medical department.

Miranchuk is an intelligent and technically gifted footballer. We wanted to see him at Barcelona, but soon we saw what kind of stars we have in the academy. Now I’m glad that Barcelona have players like Gavi and Pedri.

Such decisions are always difficult. Yes, we did not sign Miranchuk to Barcelona, but I wish him all the best.
