The second club withdrew from the championship of Turkey due to the earthquake
Football club “Gaziantep” refused further participation in the Turkish championship due to a powerful earthquake that occurred in the country.
“Our struggle continues to heal the wounds inflicted by the earthquake that affected ours and 10 neighboring cities on February 6th. After such a disaster, football was out of the question.
It is not possible for our club to continue its sports activities in all these difficult conditions. By the decision of the Board of Directors, Gaziantep decided to refuse to play in the Super League and the Turkish Cup in the 2022/23 season. We believe that our city and country will heal the wounds inflicted by this earthquake as soon as possible, and we would like to thank everyone who supported us,” the club’s website said in a statement.
Earlier, the withdrawal from the championship was announced by Hatayspor, which is also based in the city affected by the earthquake.
Gaziantep (25 points) is 10th in the standings, Hatayspor (23) is 14th. Thus, the tournament will continue with the participation of 17 teams.
On Monday, a series of powerful earthquakes hit the southeast of Turkey. According to the latest data, the total number of deaths in the country exceeded 24.6 thousand people, more than 80 thousand were injured. National mourning has been declared in the country until February 12.
