Former president of Juventus Andrea Agnelli said that in 2019 the boss Uefa Alexander Ceferin refused to change the format of the Champions League.

In 2019, Aleksander Čeferin and I were ready for change. The best clubs of the European Clubs Association (ECA extension) agreed to a new format. But the middle farmers of the big leagues, the bosses of the strongest leagues and some federations saw a threat in the new format. Therefore, Čeferin decided not to implement the changes.

The clubs wanted to update and improve the European football system. When Uefa stood in their way, plans arose to create new competitions with teams ECA extension. Whether that will be successful now depends on the European Court of Justice.

Because I didn’t fight for change Uefa from inside? It was an internal struggle, I could not win it. Even with the knowledge that the current system does not offer a future for teams like Ajax, Anderlecht, Celtic, Benfica, Panathinaikos, Red Star and others.

Therefore, it is necessary to go further, to look for other ways to develop European football.
