Initial reports that Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic became the oldest football player in the history of qualifying and final tournaments for the European Championships following the results of Friday’s matches are incorrect.
The Swede, born on 3 October 1981, came on as a substitute in the Euro 2024 qualifying Group F match against Belgium (3-0) at the age of 41 years, 5 months and 21 days. In a parallel match in Gibraltar against Greece (0:3), Lee Casiaro appeared, the striker was born on September 29, 1981.
Casiaro is the scorer of the first goal in the history of the Gibraltar national team in official qualifying matches.
The record holder of the final stages of the Euro is the former goalkeeper of the Hungarian team Gabor Kiraly. He played in 2016 against Belgium at the age of 40, 2 months 25 days.
