Kanchelskis: “Well, Karpin won – and there are no more claims against him”
Former Manchester United football player Andrei Kanchelskis believes that after the victory of the Russian team over the Iraqi team in a friendly match, there were no complaints against Valery Karpin, and the topic of his dismissal was blown up.
In March, the Russian national team played two friendly matches: on the 23rd in Tehran, it drew with the Iranian team (1:1), on the 26th in St. Petersburg, it defeated the Iraqi team (2:0). Before the match with the Iraqis, Karpin, when asked about a possible resignation in case of defeat, said that he was not holding on to a place in the Russian team. Later, the Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin called on the specialist to decide whether he is “with the national team or on his own.”
— The team confidently won, there were many young players on the field. What are the questions for the coach? In general, I think that it is not necessary to look at the results in these friendly matches. The most important thing is for the new generation of players to gain experience, for the guys to play with each other – this is the main task of the coaching staff right now. Well, Karpin won – and there are no more claims against him. The topic of his dismissal was inflated, it seems to me, ”Kanchelskis told RB Sport.
Karpin became the head coach of the Russian national team in July 2021.
