CSKA Moscow defender Georgy Shchennikov had the opportunity to move to any team, but decided to devote himself only to the army club, said the former head coach of the Red-Blues Valery Gazzaev.
Shchennikov will leave CSKA at the end of the current season after 20 years in the team. Earlier, the head coach of the army team, Vladimir Fedotov, explained to Match TV the club’s decision not to renew the contract with the 32-year-old football player with a post-traumatic decrease in functionality.
– Young Shchennikov was one of the most promising players, but this player was severely tormented by injuries, and, unfortunately, he was never able to fully reveal his full potential. In terms of his playing qualities, he met all the requirements of modern football, and if there were no numerous injuries, he would have revealed himself even more.
20 years in CSKA speak of his best qualities, Georgy was very devoted to this club. After all, he had the opportunity to go to any other team, but he decided to connect his life with CSKA.
I would like to wish him all the best and success in his new field of activity,” Gazzaev told Sport24.
Shchennikov is a three-time champion of Russia, a three-time winner of the Russian Cup and a four-time winner of the Russian Super Cup.
