The former General Director of Spartak Yuri Zavarzin summed up the performance of the Red-Whites in the 2022/23 season.

Spartak took 3rd place in the WORLD RPL standings with 54 points. In the semi-finals of the 2nd stage of the Path of Regions of the FONBET Cup of Russia, the Red-Whites lost to Akron from MELBET-First League with a score of 1:2.

– Compared to the previous season, they performed normally, by virtue of their capabilities, but they could have done better. Change of leadership always entails dire consequences. If Spartak had performed better in the second half of the championship, it would have been great, – says Yuri Zavarzin.

– Is Abaskal’s fault in the spring failure of the team?

– It is necessary to pay attention not to the actions of the coach, but to the behavior of the players. UEFA allowed foreigners to break contracts freely, agents intervened. All this influenced the final result and the psychology of the players. The personnel reshuffle also affected, when some players expected to move somewhere, but could not.

– Is the finish outside the top 2 and the departure from the Russian Cup from Akron a failure for Spartak?

– Definitely a failure. It’s a matter of psychology. They could not forget how to play football in a few matches. The coach had to set up the team and try to fix the situation.

– Did the leadership of Spartak rush to extend the contract with Abaskal? The decline of the “red-whites” began after the signing of a new agreement.

Who else can be nominated? Ours? Foreign specialists will not go because of the lack of European competitions in the next 3-4 years. Abascal got involved in the work, emotionally reacts to failures. Next season, he will help Spartak,” Zavarzin quotes “Sport Day after Day”.
