Fans die in stampede during match in Africa
Two people were killed and 10 injured at the stadium in Cotonou when Benin supporters tried to break into the arena before the match against Senegal, according to L’Equipe.
The stampede occurred on Saturday during the qualifying match of the African Cup of Nations. The teams at the stadium in Cotonou tied with a score of 1:1.
One person died in the stands and another in the hospital.
A crowd of fans who did not have time to enter the stadium by the start of the match rushed into the arena, which caused a stampede. The gates of the stadium were ordered to be opened free of charge to facilitate access for fans.
A similar incident occurred in March 2019 during a match against Togo, when one person died and 13 were injured.
