Appeal to European clubs.
Has it ever happened that the club that won the European Cup, immediately after the triumph, put the entire squad on sale? This is exactly what is happening at Sevilla now – at the end of May, the red and white beat Roma in the Europa League final, and now the Spanish giant is forced to deal with the debt issue – large-scale changes are on the way the club.
Champions yesterday, debtors today
Also, information about debt has appeared quite recently. Latest data is Thursday. And the president of Sevilla, Pepe Castro, informed the sports block of his presence. Here is what the insiders reported:
This is something unexpected. Nobody expected it. Not to mention the sports direction, led by the newcomer Horta.
By the way, the “Mingyan” debt itself did not form spontaneously – it took several seasons. The team fell big behind at the end of the 2020/21 season (losses reached 39 million euros), the following season the minus was around 24.8 million.
It was during these seasons that the red and white spent more on transfers than they earned from player sales: in the 2019/20 season, the Spaniards invested more than 188 million euros in strengthening, while 131 million were earned from transfers in exit. in the next two years the figures are more modest, but the dynamics are similar.
At the same time, the Mingiani have made good money this season. We are also talking about successes in the European Cup – prize money for participation in the group stage of the Champions League plus money for passing the entire playoff distance THE. This includes transfers – Sevilla received 50 million euros from Barça for Jules Kunde, Aston Villa paid 31 million for defender Diego Carlos, other small deals – 3 million each for de Jong and Pozo, 4 – for the loan of Lucas Ocampos to Ajax.
Apparently, even these revenues are not enough for the Spanish team to pay off their debts.
New wave of sales
Putting your players on the transfer list is one of the key steps in paying off your debt. As mentioned above, Sevilla already have the experience of last season, then managed to earn almost 92 million euros with a reinforcement cost of 29.4. The problem is that there are currently no players in the red and white for whom you can ask the same amount as Kunde – according to rumors, one or two big sales may not be enough to pay off the debt. Thus, all players from the main team are transferred.
The Spanish giant has several expensive players at its disposal: Moroccan striker Yussouf En-Nesiri, winger Lucas Ocampos and goalkeeper Bono quickly emerged. Judging by insiders, the representatives of Sevilla themselves turned to European clubs to negotiate a transfer. Also, special preference would be given to teams from the English Premier League – this is the most lucrative market, the English giants regularly battle for the best players and offer huge sums. It is reported that, among others, the Spaniards have come into contact with Manchester United.
This is associated with the departure of the sports director
Monchi is a Sevilla legend. While still a player, he spent his entire professional career with the Mingyans. Immediately upon completion, the Spaniard received the position of sports director at his native club and worked there first from 2000 to 2017, and then from 2019 to 2023.
It was under Monchi that Sevilla gained strength – twice became the owner of the Spanish Cup, once – the Super Cup, 7 times became the winner of the Cup Uefa/ Europa League and a Super Cup Uefa. During the same period, Sergio Ramos, Alberto Moreno, Jose Antonio Reyes and Jesus Navas left the “red and white” system.
On June 16, it became known that the iconic official of the Spanish club was leaving Sevilla: Monchi decided to continue his career at Aston Villa, whose head coach is Unai Emery, whom he knew. According to rumors, this was also due to the difficult situation of the “red and white”: Monchi was not ready to part with most of the squad, even if the club needed it. Probably, the fact is that the coach understood how much work would have to be done next: the backbone of Sevilla would have to be put back together.
Long reboot
Of course, you won’t have to sell everyone at all: the total cost of the Sevilla squad is estimated at 196.75 million euros and you need to find 90 of them. But they will be looking for a new team mainly for leaders – if you sell fewer status performers, then players in the application they will be less, and the best players will want to leave due to dubious prospects.
And in this case it will be extremely difficult to start the new season without acquisitions: in the last championship the Mingyans just got out of the relegation zone, now the fight for survival will be even more fierce.
The financial condition of the club overlaps with this. Sevilla are not rich, they invest 100 million euros in transfers every year. The red and white are living within their means, they don’t have a huge budget, they are looking for talented youngsters: this summer they acquired 23-year-old centre-back Loic Bade from Rennes, before that they signed Gonzalo Montiel (River Plate), Kunde himself .
In such a small space a new combat-ready squad cannot be built in such a short time, and therefore it is likely that Sevilla are now entering a long phase of restart (Ramos could help). Participation in the group stage can also help Champions League next season, the question is whether the club will stay in La Liga or have to spend a year in the Segunda, forming a new backbone.
