Croatian footballers Luka Modric and Dejan Lovren have again been charged with perjury in a financial misconduct case against former Dinamo Zagreb president Zdravko Mamić, L’Equipe reports.
Mamić, who is on the run in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison in 2018 for embezzlement with his accomplices in the amount of more than 15 million euros, the damage to the state was estimated at 1.5 million euros. The ex-head of the club was found guilty on several counts, including receiving illegal profits from player transfers. Suspicion included deals involving the transfer of Modric to Tottenham in 2008 and Lovren to Lyon in 2010.
In 2017, Modric and Lovren were charged with perjury, but the charges were dropped by a Croatian court on the eve of the 2018 World Cup. Croatian prosecutors have said there is sufficient evidence that Modric and ex-Zenith player Lovren gave false testimony during the initial trial.
According to the Croatian penal code, the “criminal offense of perjury” is punishable by six months to five years’ imprisonment.
