Midfielder Daler Kuzyaev is one of the most underrated players in Russia, he could play in Italy and Spain, agent Alexei Safonov told RB Sport.

Kuzyaev’s contract with Zenit expired on June 30, 2023.

“The man won five championships, won cups, won everything in Russia,” says Safonov. “Sometimes you want something new. Hockey players go to the NHL when they get the chance, basketball players dream of playing in the NBA. I would like to try myself at another level, not only in Russia. Especially since it’s the same thing every year. Already some kind of Groundhog Day turns out. Kuzyaev’s desire is quite understandable. And he has opportunities. Now, of course, politics intervenes in all this. And so, I think he could easily play in Italy and Spain.

— Even in the top leagues?

– It seems to me that Kuzyaev is one of the most underestimated players in Russia. More often they look at those who score goals, and Daler’s role is different. He is one of those who carries the piano. A big hard worker in this sense. Knows how to open up and connect, score a goal. Lots of good qualities. Players who do this amount of work on the field are very much appreciated.

Does politics prevent our players from leaving for foreign clubs?

– Unfortunately yes. Like in that joke where a Russian border guard is asked: “Well, is the border locked?”, and he replies: “Well, of course, otherwise he would have left.”

– If Kuzyaev manages to play abroad, will there be something to tell his grandchildren about? Also an incentive?

– Well, Zenit players are of a good level, everyone won in Russia. There will be a salary even a little less or more in the new club, not so much. There are also sports incentives, the same European competitions, which our clubs are now deprived of. Living in another country, learning a language is also a new experience. There you can be away from all this politics, play purely football, not depend on anyone.

The 30-year-old scored five goals and provided seven assists in 35 games last season. He helped Zenit win the gold medals of the Russian Football Championship for the fifth time in a row.
