Dyukov explained the decision of the RFU to remove one round in the finals of the Way of Regions of the Cup of Russia

President of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Alexander Dyukov said that the sponsor of the tournament proposed to remove one round in the finals of the FONBET Way of Regions of the Cup of Russia.

— We liked the new format of the Russian Cup: it is a bit more complicated than the tournament according to the Olympic system. But our sponsors and most of the fans voted for this format. As for its changes, we have some limitations. Our title sponsor Fonbet approved this format: under the terms of the contract, any change is possible only in agreement with them.

Our sponsor suggested canceling one match in the upper bracket. One can argue with this, but this decision has its pros and cons. A club that is eliminated in the RPL Path final is discriminated against. Although all the clubs and members of the executive committee, having considered this issue, did not see any serious injustice. The reform of the tournament is not significant, but everyone felt that this change would benefit the Cup of Russia, Dyukov said to the Championship.

In the 2022/23 season, the Russian Cup was played in a new format, the teams were divided into the Path of Regions and the Path of the RPL. CSKA became the winner of the tournament.

Match TV and the RFU previously signed an agreement to show FONBET matches of the Russian Football Cup in the next two seasons.
