Spanish football is not coming off the humiliating blow of the Women’s World Cup final and Luis Rubiales, day by day, is losing significant support. Now it Committee of Presidents of RFEF Regional and Territorial Federations met and they demanded his resignation.

After the meeting that took place, the group of leaders issued a statement calling for Rubiales to step down immediately and unanimously supporting Pedro Rocha, who has replaced him on an interim basis for the time being.

On Sunday, August 27, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) called an “urgent and extraordinary” meeting with the Federation’s Committee of Presidents. The purpose? Carry out an “analysis and assessment” of the FIFA suspension of Luis Rubiales.

Just one day later, the Commission clarified several issues. The presidents call for the resignation of Luis Rubiales from the presidency of the RFEF. With the announcement they made, the officials made their position clear and also took the opportunity to congratulate the Women’s Team for winning the 2023 World Cup.

They also called for an organic restructuring of strategic positions in the Federation to start a new stage of management, unanimously supporting Pedro Rocha as interim president of the RFEF.

Following the latest events and the unacceptable behavior that has seriously damaged the image of Spanish football, the presidents ask Mr. Luis Rubiales to resign immediately as president of the RFEF.
Hearty congratulations to the women’s soccer team for winning the World Cup. We appreciate the meaning and legacy of success for Spanish sport. We express our admiration and gratitude to an incomparable group of players and we express our congratulations to all those who have built, all these years with determination, the development of women’s football.
We will urge the respective bodies to carry out a deep and imminent organizational restructuring in strategic positions of the Federation to give way to a new stage of management in Spanish football.
As soon as FIFA suspended Mr. Luis Rubiales, the Federation’s internal protocols have been activated as a result of the suspension.
In addition, we called on President Pedro Rocha to immediately withdraw the last communication on behalf of the Federation with FIFA and UEFA that we were aware of today.
The RFEF remains committed to continuing to deliver on its investment and equity policies for the development of women’s football.
Finally, the Committee of Presidents unanimously gave its support to D. Pedro Rocha to be able to lead a new phase where dialogue and reconciliation with all football institutions is the line to follow. We are available to the CSD and all the institutions involved to continue building the 2030 World Cup bid together.

What is the Committee of Presidents of Autonomous Federations?

The Committee consists of all the presidents of the Autonomous Federations, which have legal personality, their own and differentiated assets, budget and special legal status. Each of them is governed by general Spanish legislation, by the specific legislation of the Autonomous Community to which they belong, by its Statute and Regulations and, in addition, by its own internal regulations. Among some of its functions is compliance with RFEF rules and guidelines for official matches organized or supervised by it or assigned to them as soon as they cross its territory, as well as disciplinary matters.
