The head of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), Aleksander Ceferin, commented on the situation around the head of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, noting that his actions after the final of the women’s world championship were inappropriate.
On August 20, the Spanish women’s team beat England 1-0 to win the World Cup title. At the awards ceremony after the end of the game in Sydney, Rubiales kissed the lips of Spanish footballer Jenny Hermoso on the lips. She later said that she “didn’t consent to the kiss.” The head of the RFEF was suspended by the International Football Federation (FIFA) from football activities at the national and international levels for 90 days.
— I am a lawyer and one of the vice-presidents of FIFA. His case is under the jurisdiction of the disciplinary body of the international federation. Any of my comments will be taken as pressure. I just have to say that I am sad that such an event overshadows the victory of the Spanish team. We must change the situation. I had a meeting with Laura McAllister (Vice President of UEFA). We must do more.
Of course, what he did is inappropriate. We all know this. I hope he understands this. At the moment, this is enough, because the decision will be made by the disciplinary committee, L’Equipe quotes Čeferin.
On Wednesday, it was reported that Rubiales’ mother was admitted to the hospital after feeling unwell on the third day of an earlier hunger strike.
