Four players of the Greek national team did not take part in the 2024 European Championship qualifying match with Gibraltar (5:0) due to an error by the team administrators, the publication reports The Sun.
Midfielders Petros Mantalos, Manolis Siopis, Dimitris Kourbelis, and defender Kostas Tsimikas were not included in the game. In the last Euro qualifying match with the Netherlands (0:3), they all received a yellow card, which became their second qualifying match.
The team management believed that the players would not be able to go to the meeting with Gibraltar due to too many warnings. However, according to the rules, a one-match disqualification occurs after receiving three yellow cards. Thus, the four players who were not included in the roster could, in theory, play in the match without hindrance.
Edition The President noted that the sports director of the Greek national team, Takis Fyssas, and the technical director of the national team, Kostas Konstantinidis, admitted their mistake. However, the Greek Football Federation still began an investigation into the incident.
After five matches played, the Greek team is in third place in Group B, gaining 9 points.
