If they qualify for the World Cup, Russia’s youth teams will compete without an anthem and flag under the name “Russian Football Union”, according to a release from the International Football Federation (FIFA).
On Wednesday, the FIFA Council allowed Russian national teams to participate in the World Championships for boys and girls (under 17 years old), if they successfully pass the qualifying competitions. FIFA made the decision as the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) softened its stance on Russia last week.
FIFA has decided that Russian teams will be able to play in tournaments under its auspices under the name “Russian Football Union” rather than “Russia”, and without a flag or anthem. In addition, Russian teams will play in neutral colors.
Earlier, the UEFA executive committee asked the union’s leadership to propose a technical solution that would allow the Russian U‑17 teams (both girls and boys) to be reinstated.
