Juventus player Fagioli said that due to multimillion-dollar betting debts, he was threatened with breaking his legs

Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli told how he started betting on football matches and how this led to millions of debts.

The player was previously suspended from football for 7 months. The footballer was punished for violating a rule that prohibits betting on events organized by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), FIFA and UEFA. Fagioli was also fined 12.5 thousand euros.

Fagioli said that he was introduced to betting by another person involved in the “betting scandal,” ex-Milan player Sandro Tonali. Fagioli bet on tennis and football events, but never bet on matches involving the clubs for which he played – Cremonese and Juventus. According to the 22-year-old gambling addict, Juventus did not know about his mania. Periodically, he borrowed sums from club partners to cover betting debts. To be convincing, Fagioli came up with a legend that he supposedly needed money to buy an expensive watch. These watches then went to the owners of bookmakers, sometimes this happened immediately in jewelry stores, and sometimes the football player took the expensive accessory himself.

At one point, Fagioli’s total debt was almost 3 million euros.

— I have accumulated debts from illegal bookmakers, about 1.5 million euros in one office and up to 1.3 million euros in another. My debt grew, I often received threats that my legs would be broken,” the footballer said.

This season, Fagioli played six matches for Juventus in the Italian Championship and provided an assist.

The Ministry of Sports proposes to tighten the limit for foreign players by 2028 according to the “10 foreign players in the application, 5 on the field” scheme.

“The Ministry gave the football community, experts and specialists the opportunity to talk openly about this issue. As far as I understand, the discussion process continues,” Dyukov said.
