Former Georgian national team player Lasha Salukvadze spoke about the national team’s chances of making it to the final stage of the 2024 European Championship.
The Georgian team took 4th place in the Euro 2024 qualification in a group with Spain, Scotland, Norway and Cyprus, gaining 8 points in 8 rounds. The team can make it to the final part of the tournament through the playoffs of the Nations League – in the semi-finals of League C, the Georgians will meet Luxembourg.
— Last time the Georgian team did not make it to the Euro, losing to North Macedonia, but now the team has become stronger. At that time there was a coronavirus, and three or four players left our squad due to illness. For us then it was a blow, and this played a big role. North Macedonia was lucky then, because for us three players are a great strength.
Now we still have a chance to get to the Euro. Our opponents are Luxembourg, we have to beat them 100 percent, although in football everything is possible. Luxembourg has also started to play better lately and it will be tough. But I think that we have a stronger team, and we must win. Kvaratskhelia will not play against Luxembourg, he has too many yellow cards, but we have guys who will take the field in his place. Next we need to play with the winner of the pair of Greece and Kazakhstan. It will be harder there, but there is a chance. We have to fight, we have a good team,” Metaratings.ru quotes Salukvadze as saying.
Greece and Kazakhstan will play in the other League C semi-final. This match, like the Georgia-Luxembourg meeting, will take place on March 21, 2024.
