One of Turkey’s largest banks has published a statement saying it has nothing to do with the alleged fraud by a former manager of one of its branches through a financial pyramid scheme, as a result of which Arda Turan, Fernando Muslera and other Turkish football stars suffered, reports Reuters.
Istanbul prosecutors are seeking a 216-year prison sentence for Cecile Erzan, a former branch manager, on charges of grand fraud. According to the October indictment, Erzan stole approximately $44 million from 18 people by promising significant returns on their investments in a “secret special fund.”
Erzan convinced soccer stars to invest in the fund by telling them that iconic coach Fatih Terim also invested in the investment. Erzan paid some of the proceeds to some investors, but did not pay any proceeds or principal to most investors. The woman admitted guilt, but as a mitigating circumstance, she stated that she had returned the bulk of the money to almost all investors.
