Fan sentenced to six months in prison for insulting Rio Ferdinand

33 year old Wolverhamton fan Jamie Arnold Sentenced to six months in prison for insulting the former Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinando for racial reasons.

The incident occurred in May 2021 during the match between Wolverhampton and Manchester United (0:1), the first match after the coronavirus pandemic with fans in the stands. Arnold made racist gestures towards Ferdinand, who was working as a BT Sport pundit during the match. The 33-year-old fan was identified by CCTV.

On 8 December, Wolverhampton Crown Court sentenced Arnold to six months in prison for a racially aggravated public order offence. The fan may be released once half of his sentence has expired and will remain under surveillance for twelve months. Arnold is also banned from visiting stadiums for seven years.
