Former Spartak defender Renat Sabitov called the game with Marseille in the Champions League the most memorable match in the T-shirt of the capital club.
Sabitov moved to Spartak from Ramenskoye Saturn in January 2007 and played for the red-whites for the next four years. The game with Marseille took place in September 2010 as part of the first round of the group stage of the Champions League and ended in a victory for the Moscow club with a score of 1:0.
– It’s generally funny with Marseille – I’m used to going to European Cups with the team, but I know my place – I’m sitting. And here we are playing away, the end, we are leading. And Valery Georgievich [Карпин], apparently mixed up something, says to me: “Saba, come on, warm up.” While I was changing clothes, everything flashed before my eyes, everything went to my heels and came back, my hair stood on end. And I could have scored there too. I don’t know how I ended up in front of the gate – usually I don’t run here or there. They gave it to me, but I couldn’t beat the goalkeeper. So there is something to remember, I will do this for a long time,” Sabitov said in an interview with “Championship”.
Karpin worked at Spartak, first as general director and then as head coach from 2008 to 2014, and twice led the club to silver medals in the Russian Championship.
