Chocolate coins thrown onto the field caused a Bundesliga match to be stopped
The match of the 15th round of the German football championship between Borussia Monchengladbach and Werder Bremen was stopped for several minutes due to a fan protest.
The meeting took place in Monchengladbach on Friday and ended with a score of 2:2. After 12 minutes of play, home fans began throwing chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil onto the field, a traditional holiday gift for children. Stadium staff, as well as referee Felix Zweyer, collected foreign objects for five minutes, after which play resumed.
Earlier, fan groups across Germany announced plans to hold protests against the league’s plans to sell a share of future broadcast revenue to an outside investor. Fans agreed to stop singing and chanting for the first 12 minutes of each game.
