Former head coach of Lokomotiv Yuri Semin did not support the idea of creating a football Super League, and also did not rule out that clubs from the MIR Russian Premier League (RPL) could get into it.

On December 21, the European Court declared illegal the actions of the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to ban the creation of the Super League. A project for a new international club tournament was immediately proposed, which provided for the expansion of the Super League to 64 teams.

— Do you think Russian clubs have a chance to participate in it?

— Firstly, everything is still unknown. I think there will be further agreements to create this league. This time. The second point is that everyone has a chance. And with us, too.

– And from the point of view of the situation in the world, will they take us?

— You ask about the chances. I say, we have chances, we don’t disturb the situation.

— Are we at the level of European clubs? The same Zenit, for example.

“This whole idea, I think, comes from the financial situation. Because the teams’ budgets have reached some maximum size. And Real Madrid, and Barcelona, and all English clubs. And I think this forced individual club presidents to make this decision. Because the budget probably cannot increase further. There are no such opportunities. That’s why they insist on this decision. I still have doubts about how it will all look. If anything concerns football, it’s better for me to leave it as it was,” Metaratings.ru quotes Semin.

In April 2021, the English “Manchester United”, “Manchester City”, “Tottenham”, “Liverpool”, “Chelsea” and “Arsenal”, the Spanish “Barcelona”, “Atletico” and “Real”, the Italian “Milan”, “ Inter and Juventus announced the creation of the Super League. After the threat of sanctions from FIFA and UEFA, only Real Madrid and Barcelona remained in the Super League.
