Portuguese Tomas Amaral has been appointed sports director of Spartak, according to the Moscow club’s website.
The specialist replaced the Briton Paul Ashworth, who will take the post of technical director of the “red-whites”. Amaral will take up his duties on January 1.
— I’m glad to become part of such a big club. I know that Spartak is a truly national team in Russia. I believe that success is achieved primarily not by individual work, but by collective work. And I evaluate players not only by lines in their resume, age or height: for me, their current football qualities and potential are more important.
In addition to Portuguese, I speak Spanish and English. But I also know a few words in Russian, and my Russian wife will help me both in learning the language and in adapting to a new country,” said Amaral.
Over the past 4.5 years, Amaral has held the position of senior scout at Benfica Lisbon. Before that, he was an assistant coach at Farence and Braga, and a scout at Granada, Eibar and Valladolid.
Benfica reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2022 and 2023.
After 18 rounds, Spartak is in fifth place in the Russian Championship standings with 30 points.
