Zenit coach Sergei Semak responded to a question about whether he was experiencing burnout after nearly 6 years of working at the club.
I am driven by the outcome of my work. This isn’t just a ranking. In my coordinate system this is a broader concept. If you are satisfied with this result, then you still experience emotions. What a coach experiences when he wins a Cup or a Championship ends soon. Therefore, in the first place is the thirst to see the fruits of one’s labor. To do this, I, for my part, have to do it 100% right. And I need to know that I’m doing my best.
What do I mean by the words “outcome of labor”? This isn’t just a ranking. This is precisely the result of our work: the number of goals we score, how we play defense, how we rebuild, changing the tactical scheme. What we gain, what we lose, how long we manage to update the composition, how much we manage to get out of the difficult situations we find ourselves in. All this together is hard daily work that requires a lot of strength and emotions.
And, of course, it is possible that the day will come when I will understand that I am devastated and cannot give anything either today or in the future. This, of course, can happen. But we don’t know what could happen to us tomorrow. So why think about what will happen in six months or a year?
