The goalkeeper of St. Petersburg “Zenith” Denis Adamov told Match TV why he did not emotionally celebrate his salvation in the penalty shootout of the return match of the final of the RPL FONBET Russian Cup with CSKA.
On Wednesday, Zenit defeated CSKA in a penalty shootout (5:4) and advanced to the Superfinal of the tournament. Regular time ended with the score 0:0. Adamov parried Anton Zabolotny’s shot in a series of 11-meter strikes.
— When Zabolotny approached the ball in the penalty shootout, did you have a premonition that you would take the kick?
– Just before this blow – no. This time I just focused on the sensations of the impact. But when I took it, it was too early to rejoice – it was the middle of the series. I tried to keep my emotions inside. Although, maybe it was worth throwing them out. It’s just that sometimes it helps because it gets easier, and sometimes it doesn’t.
— At the very end of normal time, a dangerous moment arose at the Zenit gate with the participation of the same Zabolotny.
– And even two. It was really dangerous, but, on the other hand, the army team allowed them to warm up before the penalty shootout. And before that, I spent almost the entire game practically without the ball. So there was a small plus in these episodes too.
— Did Zenit look better in this match than in the previous few?
— Overall, the game went well for us. And there were a lot of chances, and in general there was a feeling that 80% of the game time we had the ball. CSKA did not really leave their half of the field, not counting the moments in the end. It’s not easy for a goalkeeper to play this game – you have to keep yourself in good shape and move. But it’s still a little different. It’s just a pity that we can’t score from the game yet and realize our attacking potential. We will work on this,” Adamov told Match TV.
Zenit will play against Baltika Kaliningrad in the match for the trophy. The game will take place on June 2 in Moscow.
