Former Zenit goalkeeper Andrei Lunev told Match TV that the St. Petersburg team deserved victory in the Russian Championship.
On Saturday, Zenit beat Rostov with a score of 2:1 in the match of the 30th round of the MIR RPL and won the championship title for the sixth time in a row. Before the final round, Sergei Semak’s team lost two points to Dynamo Moscow in the standings. Lunev played for the Blue-White-Blues from 2017 to 2021.
“Everyone played, everyone had a chance.” Not everything was in Zenit’s hands, but the guys did everything they could, and in the parallel game they got the result they wanted. Zenit’s championship is well deserved.
Of course, I was happy for the guys. Zenit is not a foreign team to me. I congratulated the guys I talk to on their next title.
— This is Zenit’s sixth championship in a row. How did the team manage to take gold despite not being in the best condition?
— Probably, the competitors were not stable. Again, the core of Zenit has been preserved. The guys have been playing together for a long time. They overcame all the bad moments and achieved the desired result.
— So the cumulative championship experience played a role in the ending?
– Undoubtedly. “Zenit has more experience in such intense matches, when the fate of the championship is decided, than Dynamo and Krasnodar,” Lunev told Match TV.
