The media market regulator of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has suspended the work of about two dozen television channels that were broadcasting matches of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) football tournament in Morocco without a license. This was reported by the Okapi radio station.
By decision of the Supreme Council of Audiovisual Media of the DRC, the broadcast ban on these television channels will last 45 days. The Council noted that these Average guilty of signal piracy and illegal transmission of legally protected content, including CAN matches. Therefore, the rules regulating the functioning of audiovisual communications, as well as copyright, have been seriously violated.
The temporarily banned TV channels are recorded in the largest Congolese cities, including the capital Kinshasa.
The Africa Cup of Nations football matches started on December 21st and will end on January 18th. Teams from 24 African countries are participating in the tournament. The matches take place in six cities in Morocco.
The first CAS championship took place in 1957. Since 1968 the tournament has been held every two years. It is considered the main African football championship among national teams.
