Russian football risks losing its finances and international competitiveness if a new limit on foreign players is introduced. The general secretary of the Russian Football Federation spoke about it in an interview (RFU) Maxim Mitrofanov.
Earlier, Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev said in an interview that the new order on the limit for foreign players provides for the reduction of one foreign player every year until the 2028/29 season. The Ministry of Sports proposes to tighten the limit for foreign players by 2028 according to the “10 foreign players in the application, 5 on the field” scheme.
“It’s mathematics. Our football risks becoming less competitive at the international level. Financial losses are also possible. Clubs will sell strong players for less money, because they will be forced to get rid of them urgently, Mitrofanov said. “At the same time, later, when reinforcements are needed for international competitions, prices will increase, plus new players will need time to adapt. That is, we will lose both in quality and in money. We will create a shortage of quality Russian players. The best clubs RPL the best Russians will be distributed among themselves and the remaining teams will suffer, both financially and sportingly. We will create the conditions so that agents can speculate on players’ salaries.”
According to the current limit, clubs RPL can include 13 foreign players in the application and release 8 foreign players on the field. In September, the Russian Football Federation said that the current limit allows for the first time to increase the playing time of young players to 18%.
