African football player died during a match, choking on a coin – media
Footballer of the second division club of the Burundian championship “Gepye du Lac” Igiraneza Aimé Guerik tragically died during the match, reports Sport News Africa.
The incident occurred on Saturday during a Burundian League B match in Ngaraga. Gerik suddenly lost consciousness on the field. Despite the intervention of medical teams, the player died while being transported to the hospital.
According to the source, the cause of death was a coin that the midfielder held in his mouth and accidentally swallowed. Presumably, this coin was a “gri-gri” – a voodoo talisman with which the football player tried to attract good luck.
The Burundi Football Federation issued a statement of condolences to the player’s family and his club, without specifying the cause of death.
