Turkish police have arrested 26 people in connection with betting, including 14 football players and the former vice-president of Galatasaray.
Turkish police have arrested 26 people in connection with betting on football matches, reports TRT Haber television.
It is noted that police conducted searches in 11 provinces and detained 26 of 29 suspects, including 14 football players, former Galatasaray vice-president Erden Timur, a police officer, Eyuspor vice-president Fatih Kulaksiz and the director of international relations and national teams of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) Bugra Cem Imamoglullar.
Earlier, a betting scandal erupted in Turkish football; 149 referees and assistants were suspended. Media reported that about 600 football players would be called to testify. The TFF announced that 371 of the 571 referees have at least one bookmaker account, with 152 referees betting regularly.
