International Football Federation Council (IFAB) will evaluate the possibility of changing the rules to determine offside on January 20, 2026. This was reported by the Spanish newspaper AS.
This is noticeable IFAB will discuss the topic of changing the offside rules at a meeting in London. It is expected that, if adopted, the rules will apply from the 2026/27 season.
Currently, offside is detected when any part of an attacker’s body that can score a goal is closer to the opponent’s goal at the time of the pass than the second-to-last defender, including the goalkeeper.
