PSG footballer Ruiz talks about Safonov and Chevalier: “We don’t often train penalties because we have fantastic goalkeepers”
PSG midfielder Fabian Ruiz admitted that the French team does not spend much time practicing kicks from the penalty spot because they believe in their goalkeepers in the post-match penalty shootout.
On Thursday, PSG beat Marseille on penalties in the French Super Cup match (2:2; Pen. 4:1). Parisian goalkeeper Luca Chevalier saved two shots.
In December 2025, PSG also defeated the Brazilian Flamengo in a series of penalty kicks in the Intercontinental Cup final (1:1; Pen. 2:1). Russian PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov saved four shots in a row.
“It’s true that we don’t practice penalties that much. Some players practice them with goalkeepers, but this is not an aspect we work on a lot. We have fantastic goalkeepers who are the benchmark in this area, as well as players who are excellent penalty takers. I hope we can win more matches. But if it comes to penalties, then I believe in our goalkeepers who bring us titles,” Ruiz was quoted as saying by Foot Mercato
