During the winter break, Spartak once again changed its head coach – the Moscow team was headed by the Spaniard Juan Carcedo. It’s hard to say how successful the next foreigner’s alliance with the “red-whites” will be. Some foreign specialists achieve remarkable success after parting with the capital club. Michael Laudrup won the English Football League Cup, Unai Emery won the Europa League several times and collected all kinds of trophies in France. Murat Yakin made it to the World Cup playoffs.

He succeeded after Spartak and Domenico Tedesco. The German specialist won the German Cup, and the day before he took the first trophy with the new team in Turkey, achieving something that even Jose Mourinho could not do.

After Spartak

Domenico Tedesco, together with Spartak, won silver medals in the Russian Championship in the 2020/21 season. As a result, the “red-whites” received the right to play in the Champions League qualifications, but the specialist chose to lead another team, RB Leipzig, to victories in the main European Cup. It is curious that the German could have played against his former team in the 2021/22 season, but the quarter-final matches of the Europa League did not take place, since UEFA decided to get involved in politics, counting a technical defeat to the Russian club.

Tedesco failed to win the trophy in Europe with the Bulls, but RB Leipzig won the German Cup in the debut season of the ex-Spartak head coach, defeating Freiburg in a penalty shootout. After failures at the start of the next season, the German was fired. And after some time, he somewhat unexpectedly headed one of the strongest national teams in Europe – the Belgian national team. However, it was not possible to achieve big victories with the “Red Devils”; some time after the next dismissal, the coach was discovered in Turkey.

In September 2025, Tedesco took charge of Fenerbahçe, where he inherited a solid squad from Jose Mourinho, who never won a single trophy with the Turkish team. With players like Matteo Guendouzi, Ederson, Marco Asensio, Milan Skriniar at their disposal, it would be possible to make some noise in Europe. However, outside Turkey, the German specialist’s team performs with varying success, losing points in matches with the Czech “Victoria”, the Hungarian “Ferencvaros” and the Croatian “Dynamo”. But on the domestic stage, the ex-head coach of the “red-whites” is coping so far.

Long-awaited victory

As the vice-champion of Turkey last season, Fenerbahçe received the right to play in the country’s Super Cup. In the semi-finals, Tedesco’s team confidently beat the bronze medalist Samsunspor, scoring two unanswered goals. In the final, the “yellow canaries” had to fight with the champion and leader of the national championship, Galatasaray.

This season, the rivals have already met in the Super League; at home, Tedesco’s team only managed to avoid defeat, equalizing the score in the fifth minute added to the second half. In the Super Cup final, bookmakers gave preference to Galatasaray, but Fenerbahçe were not happy with such arrangements. Guendouzi opened the scoring midway through the first half, and after the break Jaden Ostervolde doubled his team’s lead.

Fenerbahçe did not allow the opponent to win back or at least reduce the gap in the score. Tedesco, who had not won anything since 2022, took the long-awaited trophy. And it just so happened, he did what Jose Mourinho could not do in Turkey. Spartak, by the way, also hasn’t won a trophy since 2022, and perhaps the German specialist could now help his former team. But the reality is that he is in Turkey, and another foreigner will try to lead the “red-whites” to victories.
