IFAB will consider additional measures to combat time-delaying in football – media

The International Football Association Board (IFAB), which has the power to change the rules of the game, will hold talks with a view to adopting measures aimed at deliberately delaying time, The Athletic reports.

Last year, the IFAB amended the rules to award a corner kick to the attacking team if the defending goalkeeper holds the ball for more than eight seconds.

According to the publication, other potential innovations to “improve the flow of the game” have been considered in recent months, with IFAB advisory groups exploring the possibility of introducing a countdown for kick-ins and goal kicks.

Ways to reduce time lost due to substitutions have also been assessed and potential changes to the rules will be further considered at the IFAB annual meeting next week. The proposed amendments must be tested before they are officially adopted, so it is likely that the amendments, if approved, will come into force after the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the summer in the United States, Canada and Mexico, the material says.
