Onopko – about the failed transfer to Barcelona: “For them I was a simple “collective farmer”
The coach of the Russian national team and Rostov, Viktor Onopko, told Match TV why his transfer to Barcelona fell through.
Earlier, Onopko said that in the 90s, Barcelona refused to sign a contract with him because of his appearance.
“They didn’t take me because of my appearance—those were my words.” Then it turned out that the information was translated to me incorrectly. There was interest. Cruyff’s coaching staff looked at me. They said I was very simple. To put it simply, a “collective farmer.” It’s not about appearance. Perhaps they decided so because of what I was wearing. But even now I cannot understand why for them I was a simple “collective farmer”. Perhaps they needed me to wear Louis Vuitton or Dolce & Gabbana,” Onopko said on Match TV.
In the Spanish Championship, Onopko played for Oviedo and Rayo Vallecano from 1996 to 2003.
