The head coach of the Polish national team, Czeslaw Mikhnevich, explained the decision not to call the defender Maciej Rybus to the national team due to the transfer to Spartak.

On Monday, June 20, the Polish Football Association (PZPN) announced that Rybus, 32, would no longer be called up to the national team.

— It was my decision. I called him after the training camp. He was the first to know about my decision and showed great understanding. He knows what is happening around him, and the guys in the Polish national team understood his situation perfectly.

It seems to many that in the current situation he should not play in Russia. But the players know him, his wife and his position. The wife made it clear that she did not want to come to Poland. He had to make a difficult decision.

Rybus told me: “Coach, I want to help the national team, but I don’t want to harm them. I know what will happen around me if they call me, and the national team needs peace.” He perfectly understood the situation.

To be clear, in no way did I say that I was expelling him from the national team because I did not have the right to do so. Perhaps in a year everything will return to normal and Rybus will again play in the national team. We cannot rule it out,” Mikhnevich quotes Sport.pl with reference to Polish TV.

Rybus signed with Spartak as a free agent in June. He spent the previous five years at Lokomotiv, and before that he played for Terek Grozny (now Akhmat).
