Scottish football calls for tough restrictions on alcohol advertising
Scottish football clubs may be banned from advertising alcohol.
Alcohol Focus Scotland and a group of international experts are calling for strict restrictions on alcohol advertising. It is noted that the high visibility of alcohol advertising means that people are “constantly bombarded with positive messages” about the consequences of drinking.
The group’s recommendations to the Scottish government include restrictions on outdoor and public advertising, product branding, print publications and sports and event sponsorship, according to the Scottish Daily Express.
Seven of the top 12 clubs in Scotland have intoxicating drinks as sponsors.
More than a quarter of Scots drink alcohol in high doses, according to Alcohol Focus Scotland, citing a study that linked the impact of alcohol marketing to consumption.
