Known for playing for Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and Real Madrid, Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor admitted on the air of the All for the Match! program that he was ready to become Togo’s ambassador to Russia.
Adebayor is known for his philanthropy: he helped open a school and a clinic in Togo. In December 2017, Adebayor adopted his older brother’s son, who passed away.
“I would like the Russians to come to Africa and invest, because the mentalities are the same,” Adebayor said on Match TV. “There are a lot of similarities between us. It’s time for Russia to start working in Africa.
Maybe you should go into politics? Become Togo’s ambassador to the Russian Federation or an economic representative?
— Yes, I would love to do it. I am absolutely serious, no jokes. Ultimately, what do you want to do? We must share what we have. Be together! Sharing with children what we have is very important. Therefore, it is important to talk to people, to talk with Russians, with the people of Togo. If we can do something together, I’ll be glad to do it.
Adebayor was named the 2008 African Footballer of the Year 2008, and also led the Togo national team to the 2006 World Cup, scoring 11 goals in the qualifying tournament. At club level, he won the Copa del Rey in 2010/11 with Real Madrid.
