Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min has revealed that the most memorable moment of his career was South Korea’s stunning 2-0 victory over Germany in the 2018 World Cup due to the racism he suffered in the country as a teenager after joining Hamburger SV ” in 2010 year.
“I moved to Germany when I was young and went through so many really difficult, unimaginable moments. I have encountered a lot of racism. And going through such a really difficult time, I had a lot of thoughts that one day I should get my revenge.
Germany were the reigning World Cup champions at the World Cup in Russia, but a shock loss to South Korea meant they finished bottom of their group. Son Heung Min scored the second goal in stoppage time in that meeting.
— When people cry, I usually want to comfort them and hug them. But, watching the Germans cry, I felt that I was able to take revenge by doing what I like, ”the footballer added.
Son Heung Min has also dealt with racism during his English Premier League career since joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2015. Last year, eight men suspected of racist slurs against a football player were arrested at addresses in England and Wales.
