An uncompromising coach with character. PSG changes carrier

PSG uses a new approach to win the Champions League.

This summer is a historic moment. PSG decided to abandon the “expensive rich” principle and try to choose a caring coach, appointing Christophe Galtier. For the first time in all of his reign he is in the Qatari boss club. This extraordinary event shouldn’t be missed just like that. Naturally, the Parisians were pushed to this by circumstances.

It is unlikely that they have come to this simply because they themselves would have changed the concept of their decisions, abandoning the names of the stars and the glamor. It was rather influenced by the market situation, which simply didn’t have the best coaches left that they would have agreed to go to PSG and whose choice would be different from the previous elections of the Parisians.

The leaders even attempted to get such a specialist, persistently trying to hire Zinedine Zidane. But he is still enjoying the impeccable reputation he has earned at Real Madrid and does not want to risk it: he will choose his future job with great care. With a careful approach to Zidane with her status and reputation PSG with its reputation already – not the best option.

And so someone in Paris still decided to put aside the names of the stars to try to name a good specialist of the internal market, who is not spoiled by the best clubs, but has decently proved himself. The choice fell on Christophe Galtier, a native of Marseille, among other things. This is a sign of some changes in the direction of the work PSG. The race for names is in the past.

This approach, coupled with a simple cash infusion, doesn’t work. This move is caused by the disappointment of the Parisian bosses. This appointment is far more profound in its consequences than it appears. Paradoxically, a coach with a less resounding name than anyone before him should have more freedom and rights to make personal decisions in the team. This is what this signal is about. Let’s see what are the principles by which Galtier will most likely be guided, based on the demands of the club and the character traits of the coach himself.

No compromise

At his first press conference, Galtier did not cloud the compliments. He said that PSG it should become a common project for everyone in the club. And without compromise. All in the same boat. Furthermore, Galtier is certainly not empty and simple words. His predecessors did not have a tough stance. The approach of the rather meticulous Mauricio Pochettino was very casual, when it comes to his desire to acquire authority. Unai Emery also struggled to find a balance between seeking respect from her players and trying to please them. The difference was often blurred.

Galtier shouldn’t have such a problem. The very appointment of him speaks of a high level of trust and that he has been given the right to be what he wants, which is pretty tough. This helped him, a man who has been named coach of the year three times in France, to achieve relative success at previous clubs.

When David Moyes was appointed to the position of Manchester United head coach from more or less the same position, he suddenly became unsure. Rio Ferdinand spoke about it, noting that the new manager asked the team to show him how to become a winner. It did not work. Galtier has a different character: he always remains faithful to his beliefs and his methods of achieving the goal. Experience in several clubs proves this. He is clearly aware of his he area of responsibility and his rank.

Face the ego

The biggest problem that all the coaches have had to face PSG, these are the ambitions and self-centeredness of the club’s players, who for the most part are indifferent to Paris and the crest, and therefore fight for their own personal prestige. Here, after all, some of the most stellar players in the world are gathered. The attacking trio can definitely think of themselves that way.

It seems any club would be happy to see guys like Mbappe, Neymar and Messi in their ranks. But all together PSG they can create a lot of headaches. Pochettino stumbled upon this last season, when everything revolved around the saga of Mbappe’s possible exit, and whether Messi was effective enough and how lazy Neymar was. And so on. Pochettino was perceived as an attachment to these names. Both Messi and Mbappé have publicly scorned and criticized the substitutions they disagreed with. Pochettino could not solve this problem and weakened his position.

For Galtier, the names shouldn’t mean anything. Despite Mbappe’s new and not yet fully understood status, he has extended the contract with PSG under some crazy conditions that almost imply his participation in the management of the club. Galtier’s skills in human resources are praised and will be needed when the locker room is held PSG within the limits of what is allowed.

Christophe doesn’t have much experience, but in the past he has dealt with his ambitious stars and boys, from Aubameyang to Payet. He now he understands that we are talking about a different level of stardom.

Remove excess

In the past, the same Pochettino and Emery have repeatedly complained, from time to time, of the weakening of the squad and the lack of players on the occasion of some injuries. For a club like PSG this is paradoxical. Galtier already at the first press conference outlined his position on the number of players in the main team.

“There cannot be a good game without happy players. To do this, I think it is necessary to reduce their number in the main team. You can’t keep players who barely play all season in the locker room. “

For Galtier, the situation with a strictly limited group of artists is familiar. He met her regularly at Lille, which made them champions, and at Nice, which he managed last season, taking them to fifth place in Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France final. And Pochettino, for example, used more than 40 players last season. You can be sure that Galtier won’t have this.

With some PSG already dissolved. Di Maria, for example, will leave as a free agent after his contract expires. Others will follow. Apparently status Ander Herrera and Mauro Icardi only played episodic roles last season, which doesn’t match their ambitions. And why keep them, risking the atmosphere in the locker room and spending a lot of money on salaries? Other players can also exit.

Create chemistry with Campus

A separate story concerns the figure of the football director PSG Luis Campos. It was with Campos that Galtier created the champion Lille, which caused a sensation in 2021. Campos, together with Galtier, may become the leading “transfer” acquisition. PSG this year. Campos has a great reputation, he created Monaco, who won Ligue 1 in 2017, where Fabinho, Moutinho, Bernardo Silva, Mbappe and others turned out.

And after the championship of his “Lille” in 2021, Galtier called Kampos the architect of success. There is an excellent relationship between the coach and the director, they “read” each other and know how to integrate. If the alchemy between them persists and overlaps the gigantic resources in the background of their Monaco and Lille PSGsomething special could happen.

Take a look at the pupils

Fans PSG with experience, they regularly criticize the club management for the fact that there are very few alumni on the team and the bosses, as it were, spit on the academy, chasing names in the world market. The ultras have expressed their dissatisfaction both inside and outside the stadiums. The club, in their opinion, is moving further and further away from the city.

They expressed their dissatisfaction with the recent match between France and Croatia. After all, the French went out with six pupils PSG in the composition. He plays only for the Parisians, only one of them. Among those who did not come in handy were Menyan, Guendouzi, Moussa Diaby, Nkunku, Rabiot. This five at different times PSG sold to other clubs for a paltry 29 million euros in total. And now Meignan himself is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and became champion with Lille in 2021, PSG. And Nkunku is one of the most talented and sought after offensive players on the market right now.

Galtier has a lot of experience promoting local talent in the clubs where he worked. This was dictated by the truncated resources of these clubs and the ability of the manager himself to understand exactly in which direction this or that young player should turn out.

A look at Europe

This is where Galtier may have problems due to the lack of experience and specificities of European competition. However, previous clubs have not given Christophe the opportunity to have a nice walk there. But the Champions is the main goal PSGand Galtier should understand this, without getting stuck in the national tournaments, in which he is used to fighting.

Pochettino’s championship was not saved: everyone remembers the nightmare relegation from Real Madrid to the Champions League. It was the same with its predecessors. Galtier has to learn on the go and change attention in this regard. In the Champions League he has only one experience: entering there with Lille. The experience is sad: the “dogs” were the last of the group, earning a point. But, among other things, this poor track record in European competition only underlines the special confidence on the part of the leaders PSG and changing their approach, which we talked about at the beginning. Previous experience with eminent coaches did not give anything, so you can get yourself noticed very good.

Vladimir SHARAN: “The Swedes were too weak at the New Year’s table”

For many, the coming year is associated with bright hopes and expectations of changes for the better in life and work. The famous football coach is no exception. Vladimir SharanShared with the reporter Spor.ua Statements about the New Year theme.

– Until what age did you believe in Santa Claus?

– I don’t even remember. Probably up to age six. No more. Until I went to school.

– What is the most unusual New Year celebration in your life?

– The most unusual and extraordinary was the New Year, which I spent in Israel during my stay as a player in the USSR youth team. An international tournament was organized in this country, in which our team participated. It’s plus twenty outside and we’re celebrating the new year in shorts and T-shirts.

The next day we had to play against the Swedish national team in the final. The Swedes sat next to our table on New Year’s Eve, they saw how we relaxed, and how we relaxed. Believe me, we rested much better and played much better (smiles). As it turned out, the Swedes were very weak at the festive table. We won the final match 2-0.

– As a Ukrainian citizen and a football coach, what do you expect from the new year 2026?

– To be honest, everyone is waiting for one thing; peace. And I’m not the only one who can say that. If there is peace, everything will return to normal. I really want the war to end as soon as possible, for people to be free, for parents not to bury their children. This is the most important thing. And as a coach, I expect changes for the better in our football.

I would like the Ukrainian championship to be full-fledged and finally achieve some kind of stability. And also for the Ukrainian national team to successfully pass the World Cup play-off tests and please the fans as often as possible. I also really want the football players in our club to have a good future, to become real football masters, to gain recognition and to be invited to various national teams.
