Former Chelsea player Danny Drinkwater has spoken out about his time at the London club.

– I’m angry, not offended. Yeah, it looks like you’ve wasted those years. It’s 100 percent frustrating. Don’t think I still don’t care about how things went. I still beat myself up about it. But, on the other hand, is it worth it to keep kicking yourself because you can no longer change anything.

You understand that you do not participate in games, you only train. I could meet friends. I loved it, but there are always things in the background that burn. And as a person, if you’re not open enough to talk to the right people, it gnaws at you. I only found out about it later.

I suffered from mental health issues in 2019. My grandparents passed away, my dad was diagnosed with leukemia, I lost my dog and I was drunk driving, which is just not for me. I made a big mistake. I also fought for my son, which continued constantly and took its toll. I didn’t think I was depressed, but I went to a sports psychologist.

I joined Reading. The last part of last season was good. A new coach has arrived. He helped me and I felt like I was helping the team. This is probably the first time I have enjoyed football in many years. Now I have a few suggestions,” Drinkwater said.

Drinkwater only made 23 appearances for Chelsea. His contract with the club expired in early July.

The 32-year-old defender made 33 league appearances for Reading last season, scoring one goal and making one assist.
