The club advanced to the next round of the tournament thanks to the rarest ball. So in European competitions, not every season is scored.
A direct kick from a corner is generally quite rare in professional football. Usually only the most technical and self-confident players decide to send the ball into the goal from a zero angle, but even they achieve what they want in one case out of a thousand. In European competitions, where the strongest goalkeepers play, only a few succeed in performing a “dry list”.
One of these uniques was the son of the former coach of Saturn. Vladimir Weiss Jr. stunned the opponent with a brazen blow, thanks to which his team advanced to the next stage of the Champions League.
The player decided on such a bold move … in the 123rd minute of the match. Just fantastic!
The main feat after the Euro
The name of Vladimir Weiss Jr. is well known to Russian fans. And it’s not just that his father once worked in our championship: Weiss Sr. coached Saturn near Moscow in the 2006/07 season. The 32-year-old Slovak was remembered by the Russians thanks to his performance at Euro 2016, from which our team flew out in disgrace.
Unfortunately, the football player played his best match in the tournament against Russia. Weiss opened the scoring in the second match of the group stage, which ended with a defeat for our team (1:2) and almost eliminated the chances of reaching the playoffs. Vladimir hit the gates of Akinfeev with an accurate blow into the far corner, before that he sent the defenders of Smolnikov and Berezutsky “to the buffet” with a clever feint. The Slovak humiliated the defense players for almost the entire match – the left flank was completely at his disposal.
Since then, the name of the Slovak striker has been rarely mentioned in Russia. After success at the Euro, the player received a good contract in Qatar and played under the hot Arab sun for the next three years. Weiss returned to his homeland only in 2020, when Slovan became interested in his services. Together with the team, Vladimir has already won three trophies: the capital club won the last two draws of the Slovak championship, and a year ago also won the national cup.
In European competition, however, Slovan did not succeed last season. The team started from the third qualifying round of the Champions League, and eventually reached the group stage of the Conference League, where they took only third place. This year, the club from Bratislava again went to conquer the Champions League, but did not show itself too brightly. It was Vladimir Weiss who saved the Slovaks from failure at the very first stage.
sensational goal
Slovan got a modest Dynamo from Batumi as rivals, but it was not easy to defeat the Georgians. In Bratislava, the teams played a dry draw, so they had to sort things out in the second meeting. Regular time again ended without goals scored, and it seemed that the outcome of the duel would have to be determined in a penalty shoot-out … But in extra time, the teams broke through.
Dynamo unexpectedly took the lead in the 104th minute, but Slovan found the strength to fight back. The Slovaks equalized the score on the 115th, and then completely performed a miracle, having won in stoppage time.
Sensational goal chalked up Weiss. Having got the opportunity to take a corner in the last minute of the match, the Slovak made the most unexpected decision. Instead of hanging in the penalty area, Vladimir took a big risk. The football player saw that the Batumi goalkeeper had gone far out of the goal before the kick and wanted to catch him on a positional error.
As a result, the striker performed a “dry leaf” and sent the ball straight into the goal. The Georgian goalkeeper rushed back, seeing what the insidious striker was up to, but it was too late. Kupatadze reached for the ball, but failed to knock it off the goal line.
Vladimir’s ball was the last in this fight and gave Slovan a ticket to the next stage of the Champions League qualification. It is unlikely that the Slovaks will be able to stay in the tournament, but they have already said their big word: most likely, neither Salah nor Benzema will be able to repeat the achievement of Weiss.
