Former Zenit midfielder Alexei Strepetov reacted to the news that the club had signed a new contract with midfielder Wendel.

On July 21, Zenit announced the extension of the contract with the 24-year-old Brazilian until the end of the 2026/27 season.

– Will Wendel degrade without European cups?

– Ahead of Zenit is waiting for a serious season. There will be serious competition for the championship. Wendel signed a contract, which means that he will probably play for Zenit for a year. And will play well. At the moment, he and Santos are key players in the team. They have no complaints about the game. A new contract with Wendel is a big plus for Zenit. This once again shows that the club is working well with legionnaires, setting big goals and intending to win a new star this season.

– Will Wendel work out his entire long-term contract?

“He must have discussed this at length with his family and agent. The Brazilians decided to show themselves in Russia for another year. All of them are being watched from Europe. If Wendel is a cut or two above the rest in the RPL, then he will certainly receive an offer from an elite European club. He certainly dreams of performing there. And I don’t think that Zenit will be against such a transfer: to sell on good terms. This year will be decisive in terms of legionnaires. The fact that Zenit managed to keep such a clip is a big plus. It can be seen that the Brazilians have great respect for Russia, St. Petersburg and Zenit, – Strepetov is quoted by Sport Day by Day.

The Brazilian moved to Zenit from Sporting in October 2020. He made 35 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring four goals and making five assists.

Together with the Petersburgers, the midfielder became a two-time champion of Russia and won two Russian Super Cups.
