The head coach of Ferencváros, Stanislav Cherchesov, in an interview with the Championship, criticized the current format for selecting teams for the Champions League group stage.

What is the point of reacting to goals? There is a game – you need to lead, and not gush with emotions. This is only the second round: to get into the Champions League, you must first go through the next stage, and then also the playoffs. Everyone is in the same conditions, but it hurts that the champion of the country has to qualify even to participate in the Europa League.

Now, after the victory, we have guaranteed ourselves only the League of Conferences. To definitely get into the Europa League, we must definitely go through the third round. Looks like it’s time to call the Champions League something else. We are the champions, and in the groups there are already those who occupy fifth or sixth places in their country. Well, you can’t either. So we have too long a way, it used to be easier – now even the Conference League is not guaranteed to the champion of the country. This is fine? Cherchesov said.

Ferencvaros beat Slovan in the second qualifying round of the tournament on aggregate and advanced to the 3rd round of the Champions League, where they will play against Azerbaijani Qarabag.
