Manchester United players Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire have been subjected to the most abuse on Twitter of any Premier League player, according to the report.
An analysis of 2.3 million tweets in the first half of last season by British media regulator Ofcom found nearly 60,000 offensive posts.
The record holder for the number of insults was the forward of Manchester United Cristiano Ronaldo, who received 12,520 negative mentions on the social network. Ronaldo’s teammates Harry Maguire (8,954 negative posts) and Marcus Rashford (2,557) took second and third places on the list.
The report identified two peaks in the frequency of offensive tweets.
The first incident occurred on the day Ronaldo returned to Manchester United, on August 27, 2021, with 188,769 tweets posted, of which 3,961 were offensive.
The second peak came on 7 November, when Maguire tweeted an apology following Manchester United’s home loss to Manchester City.
