Ex-goalkeeper of the Russian national team Igor Akinfeev called injuries one of the reasons for leaving the national team, answering the question of the defender and midfielder of the Russian women’s team Veronika Kuropatkina.

It is foolish to hold a place until 36-37 years old, not giving anyone a chance, while realizing that one of the guys is stronger than you at the moment.

Did I want to stay just to beat Ignashevich’s record? Of course not. I never had such thoughts. If it was, I would still be in the national team. I would break Ignashevich’s record and make sure that no one comes close to me at all. I am not a conceited person, so let Sergei Nikolayevich stay on the first line as long as possible, ”Akinfeev said in an interview presented on the Youtube channel of the Russian national team.

36-year-old Akinfeev, as part of the Russian national team, won the bronze of Euro 2008, reached the 1/4 finals of the 2018 World Cup.

Former French national team coach Jean-Louis Gasset has died
