Bayern Munich secured the Bundesliga title against Dortmund with a 2-2 draw at Mainz, a reminder of the 1999-2000 title won on the final day after Leverkusen lost to Underhusking.

Bayern Munich won this year’s Bundesliga on the last matchday after beating Cologne 2-1, but more importantly after a 2-2 draw between Dortmund and Mainz as the two teams finished level on points.

In essence, Dortmund’s lost win was the result that propelled Bayern Munich to the top of the table.

However, this isn’t the first time Bayern have won a title by drawing and luck was indeed in the hands of their opponents.

Something similar, maybe even worse, happened in the 1999/2000 season when Bayern Munich took the title from Bayern Leverkusen, who lost in the last game.

This year, Bayern Leverkusen had 73 points before the start of the last game and played away against Unterhässing, while Bayern Munich, who had 70 points but also had the draw between the two teams, had 70 points and played at home against Breder Bremen.

Bayern Munich defeated Werder Bremen 3-1 and at the same time defeated Bayern Leverkusen 2-0, with Ballack scoring an own goal against his side and then conceding a second goal.

Underhussing’s goals were celebrated in Munich by Bayern players and fans cellphones in hand and the title was again a tie with both sides having 73 points and Bayern leading.
